New railway halt expected to improve travel and boost local economy

Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express gets new stop at Anantnag

The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, one of the most important railway services connecting Jammu and Kashmir, will now stop at Anantnag railway station. The announcement was made by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The decision is expected to improve travel convenience for passengers and strengthen railway connectivity in the Kashmir Valley. Since its launch, the Vande Bharat Express has become a popular mode of transport for residents, tourists and business travellers. The addition of Anantnag as a commercial stoppage is expected to benefit thousands of people who travel regularly between Jammu and Srinagar.

The Vande Bharat Express currently operates between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. Along its route, it stops at Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi and Banihal railway stations. With the latest announcement, Anantnag will become another important station on the route.

The train has attracted attention across the country because it travels through one of India's most challenging railway corridors. It also passes over the Chenab Bridge, which is recognised as the world's highest railway bridge. The project is considered a major achievement in Indian railway engineering and has significantly improved transportation in the region.

New stop for better connectivity

The decision to add Anantnag as a commercial halt was taken during discussions between Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. During the meeting, both leaders reviewed ongoing railway projects and discussed ways to improve connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials said that the new stoppage will help passengers from Anantnag and nearby areas access the Vande Bharat service more easily. Earlier, many travellers had to reach Banihal or Srinagar to board the train. With the new stop, passengers will save time and enjoy greater convenience.

Anantnag is one of the most important districts in the Kashmir Valley. It serves as a major centre for trade, education, tourism and agriculture. The town attracts thousands of visitors every year and plays a key role in the region's economy.

The new railway halt is expected to benefit daily commuters, students, government employees, tourists and businesspersons. Faster and more reliable transport can make travel easier and support economic activities in the area.

The Vande Bharat Express has already reduced travel time between Jammu and Srinagar. Compared to road travel, which can be affected by traffic, weather conditions and road closures, the train provides a comfortable and dependable alternative.

Passengers travelling on the Vande Bharat Express also enjoy modern facilities such as comfortable seating, advanced safety systems, better cleanliness and improved passenger services. These features have made the train popular among people travelling between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the Railway Minister's decision and praised the Vande Bharat service. He said the train has transformed travel in the region by offering faster journeys and world-class facilities.

According to the Chief Minister, improved railway connectivity is playing an important role in the development of Jammu and Kashmir. Better transportation helps people travel more easily and supports businesses by improving access to markets.

Growing impact on the economy

The expansion of railway services is expected to provide major economic benefits to Jammu and Kashmir. The rail network has become increasingly important for transporting goods across the region.

One of the biggest advantages of improved railway connectivity is the movement of agricultural products. Jammu and Kashmir is known for producing high-quality fruits, especially apples and cherries. Farmers often face challenges in transporting their produce quickly to markets across India.

Rail transport allows fruits and other agricultural products to reach customers faster and at lower costs. This helps farmers earn better returns and reduces transportation expenses.

The railway network is also helping industries in the region. Goods such as cement and other construction materials can now be transported more efficiently. This supports local businesses and contributes to economic growth.

Tourism is another sector expected to benefit from better rail connectivity. Kashmir remains one of India's most popular tourist destinations. Easier transportation encourages more visitors to travel to the region, helping hotels, restaurants, transport operators and local shopkeepers.

The popularity of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express can already be seen in passenger numbers. According to railway officials, the service carried more than one lakh passengers within just 22 days of commercial operations.

Between May 2 and May 23, a total of 1,01,050 passengers travelled on the train. This impressive figure highlights the strong demand for fast and comfortable rail travel between Jammu and Srinagar.

Officials believe passenger numbers will continue to rise as more people choose the train over other modes of transport. The addition of Anantnag as a stoppage is likely to attract even more passengers in the coming months.

The success of the Vande Bharat service also reflects the growing importance of railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. Over the years, major investments have been made to improve connectivity in the region, including tunnels, bridges and modern railway stations.

The introduction of the Anantnag stop represents another step towards strengthening transportation links across the Union Territory. It is expected to improve accessibility, support economic development and make travel easier for residents and visitors alike.

With increasing passenger demand, modern facilities and expanded connectivity, the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is emerging as a key part of Jammu and Kashmir's transportation network and development journey.
